Why Volunteer for CityServe?

Like any city, Danbury CT has challenges. Chronic homelessness. Underperforming schools. Deteriorating buildings. Underserved populations. They are needs that, if left unmet, will only contribute to the spiral of hopelessness that burdens the at-risk population in our city… the very people who need our love and support.
But there IS hope… because when people of faith and people of good will come together to help others, it can transform a city. That’s exactly what CityServe is positioned to do.
A new initiative of Jericho Partnership and the City of Danbury, CityServe seeks to mobilize people who want to link arms and serve. If you’ve got a heart for people… if you want to take action and enable change, CityServe needs you. We invite you to join us.

It’s life changing.

Before I started as a Reading Buddy, I was looking forward to the opportunity to help a child develop her reading skills. But I have been pleasantly surprised by my experience; I find that it is I who walks away blessed.  Being around them and seeing the light in their eyes is an invigorating start to my day

The more connections a child has with positive adult role models, the more likely they are to succeed in life. This program gives these kids new connections. Whether we read, play games, or just talk, it's the connection that matters most.

Often, our friends in the homeless community have been given labels - all too frequently undeserved.  But sometimes they can’t help but actually believe it. CleanStart allows them the opportunity to dispel those labels, to prove that they are of value, that they can contribute if only given a chance

CityServe Initiatives

South Street Elementary School Partnership

77% of the students at this Title I school live at or below the poverty line. They perform below state averages, and – with many from homes where English is not a first language - particularly struggle with reading.

Goals: Bolster students’ reading and other academic skills; assist in building beautification; support Parent-Teacher Association activities

Volunteer opportunities: Reading Buddies and team leaders; mentors; facilities support (painting, small building projects, etc., as approved); misc: drive coordinators, meal prep, etc.

Project CleanStart

Danbury’s chronic homeless residents participate in this job-readiness program, where they earn compensation and learn invaluable job & life skills by engaging in downtown clean-up and other city-run projects.
Goals: Infuse hope and self-esteem; equip participants for the job market; move them from struggling and homeless to employed and housed
Volunteer opportunities:  Job coach and team leaders to work directly with our CleanStart work teams
Jericho Spring Street Neighborhood Center
This center is in the midst of one of the city’s lowest-income neighborhoods, as a beacon of love, compassion and care.
Goals: Build community and inspire neighborhood improvement; provide programs and activities, primarily for children, but for newborns to seniors; offer case management for families in need
Volunteer opportunities: After-school tutors for grades K-5; summer camp counselors; bible study teachers.
